Can you instantly listen to a digital CD preorder?
Taylor Swift has her new CD available for preorder right now. If I preorder the digital download, will I get it now or will I be sent a code or something to download the day of?
Albums are historically released on Tuesdays. Some albums come out at 12:01 a.m. eastern time on Tuesdays due to the high demand (I remember record stores staying open to start selling Springsteen’s live box set at 12:01 a.m.). Most record companies tightly control the product to make sure it is not “leaked out” (this used to be to prevent people from making copies, and how much more so now in the digital age). The only people who get what are commonly called “pre-release” copies are radio stations and people in the media.
If the release date, therefore, says October 25, that is when you can listen to it, and not before.
