Help with DMX Programming?

Here’s the deal, yesterday I bought a Chauvet Obey 40, I already own several intelligent fixtures, and the guy in the store told me that I control them separately with the controller (the controller supports 12 fixtures), however it just has one DMX out!!!, so how do I wire the thing to control each fixture separately, do I need to get something else aside from the controller.

Your help is truly appreciated. Feel free to ask anything if you need + info. Thanks!

It’s called daisy-chaining.

Each unit should have an “out” and an “in”. Plug the “in” to the controller, and the “out” to the “in” of the next lighting fixture and so on. They don’t need to be in any order. However, DO NOT use a splitter!

A single DMX line can actually control up to 512 fixtures through daisy chaining. The lights you daisy-chain can all be different, as long as the controller is generic and not tailor made for a specific fixture.

DMX signal is “multiplexed” meaning ALL the data for all fixtures is sent to all fixtures, but the fixtures pick out the data that is meant for them. The way this works is through “addressing”. You assign an address to a fixture, usually with small DIP switches.

So say you have 4 fixtures and each has 5 channels. You’ll set the addresses to:
Fixture 1: 0
Fixture 2: 5
Fixture 3: 10
Fixture 4: 15

(More often than not, address start at 0, not 1 – but there are some manufacturers that ignore address 0 – just so you know. I can’t really say more unless I know what lighting fixtures you have

But these will be in binary, so if you have 9 dip switches, it’s:

Fixture 1: 000000000
Fixture 2: 000000101
Fixture 3: 000001010
Fixture 4: 000001111

So the only thing you need to buy is one XLR to XLR (male to female) for each lighting fixture and then daisy-chain them.

Hope that helps
