what is a good stage dimmer console?
i am looking for a good stage dimmer console for the university that i work at. i know a little about lighting but not enough to buy something for them with out consulting people abut it. i am looking for a console that can handle PAR lights. it has to have midi compatibility. i would like it to be able to run 8 lights but be expandable. oh and most important be easily transportable. all in all i am looking for a brand new setup.. lights, board, trees, and all that jazz. any suggestions would be appreciated. oh and if you know of any websites that have information that would help me better understand lighting i would appreciate you passing that along

PAR cans (incandescent and LED) and light trees you can find at GuitarCenter.com in the DJ/lighting area. I use PAR56 cans for small clubs. Trusses can be handy, too. I use the OnStage light trees. You might want to use the ones with the crank lift.
Get heavy duty AC extension cords at the local hardware store. Depending on how you set up… I use 50 foot lengths… 12″-18″ velcro tie-wraps will help keep things wrapped and neat for storage – and you can use the velcro ties to neaten up the light-tree and reduce the strain on the cables.
For the PAR cans, you will want cases… those big plastic tubs will work, but do not provide a lot of protection. I use Anvil and Viking cases for my lights and effects. The lighting console manufacturers typically have hard cases for their gear – if not, be sure to get a hard case made to protect your investment. Or maybe SKB has something that will work. Good cases cost serious $.
