What kinds of effects do people experience from florescent lighting?
I’ve been getting wicked headaches/migranes, tiredness and most troubling, difficulty concentrating and thinking. I’ve been to the doctor who thinks I may have Vertigo but the symptoms don’t quite match up. I watched the news tonight about side effects from florescent lighting and a few sounded around what I get. I tried to research this online and can’t find much. Just wondering what real suffers experience from this so that I can figure out if perhaps this is what I am suffering from. Thanks!
The health issues experienced as described above are not the result of fluorescent lighting. They are the result of lighting conditions, whether fluorescent, incandescent, or HID. The reason fluorescent is blamed is because the environment (office, classroom, etc) normally is lit using fluorescents, and that seems to be the easiest explanation. One of the main contributing factors has to do with glare. Glare is caused by the exposure of bare bulbs, such as in parabolic fixtures, reflection off computer screens (the eye strains to adjust between two images), or lights that are so close to the wall that a glarey light strip is imposed onto the wall. Even the slightest glare can create adverse health conditions after a sustained period through the course of a day. Another main contributing factor is working conditions in the office or classroom environment. A person may sit in one position with eyes focused on a task for too long without rest. Even though people, including doctors, like to blame headaches and such on fluorescent lighting, there is no real evidence that fluorescents as a light source cause these issues. There have been studies, as documented by the Illumination Engineering Sociey of North America, that links working conditions and poor lighting design to health problems. I personally have documented an instance in a school classroom where a teacher and some of the students were experiencing headaches and dizziness. This was corrected by moving the row of lights nearest the main teaching wall two feet further away from the wall because they were creating a harsh glare strip right above the markerboard.
