Save Space by Using Flex Circuits
As the size of the consumer electronics grows smaller and their functions grow larger, equipment manufacturers are looking for viable solutions that allow them to retain functionality in a given size. Flexible circuits or flex circuits are the answer to this query as these allow printing wiring on a flexible base material that may or may not include flexible cover layers. Flexible circuits are used in most of the electric devices and equipment that require added functionality in less space.
By minimizing the circuit designs, the flexible circuit manufacturers did away with the idea of bundled and discrete wires that led to space constraints in electronic products. Here are some methods by which custom flexible circuits help electronic device manufacturers in saving space by using flex circuits.
- Flat Design: As the circuits are printed on the flexible film, it allows a great deal of space saving in the design and construction of a device. The flex circuits give designers the option to design for form as well as function. The planar form is very thin and higher density signaling can be achieved compared to traditional wiring schemes. The thin polymer film circuits can be designed to accommodate bends and curves to provide new options for electronic packaging.
- Multi-layered Designs: The flexible circuits can be easily used for single, double, and multilayer designs. The flexibility of the circuits allows complex designs that are not possible with either standard wiring or rigid printed circuit boards. Similar to rigid printed circuit boards the layers are connected by plated through holes and can be designed for controlled impedance. High density wiring on thin substrates make flex circuits ideal for the medical electronics and electronics test industries.
- Custom Flexible Circuits: Flexible circuit manufacturers can create custom flexible circuits to address the specific requirements of the equipment manufacturers.
