In a documentary regarding an urban city, a physician explains what life was like for area doctors in previous years. Interestingly, the first white man to arrive in the area was a doctor. This doctor was at the time on an expedition to explore the opportunities in the community. He concluded that a doctor was not in high demand in the area, and went back to his original posting where physicians had ample work and pay.
The area had several physicians, but they were not well off, as patients had little money to offer as payment. When the Civil War broke out, they packed their medical bags and left for wartime hospitals. The 19th century physicians who performed life-saving procedures have been referred to as among the greatest of all unsung heroes. In that era, the study of medicine demanded of those men who pursued it was not an easy path. It proved to be a difficult profession with unknown income, that did not work traditional days or hours. Although there were a few appreciated patients who could afford to pay their medical bills, many more existed who could not.
There were very few nights which did not bring a sick call in the early morning hours. The poor doctor, and any nearby neighbors who were asleep, would awaken to sounds of stomping feet on his porch as well as a frantic pounding on the door. These physicians were not always paid in cold, hard cash for the work they performed. They often offered the doctor whatever crop they grew, or worked for the doctor until the bill was paid in full. In order to supplement their meager salary, some hardworking doctors sold homemade medicines in addition to their practice. This renegade doctor was one of those physicians.

Eventually, doctors began practicing medicine in accordance with a standard code of conduct and ethics, giving the public a high degree of confidence that their medical needs would be well provided in a modern hospital setting.
