Emergency Light Bars – Advantages and limitations

Strobe lights work by ionizing and discharging a current inside the tube, igniting xenon gas, which is typically used in these lights, thus producing a high intensity light that flashes frequently. The technology used in strobe lights is similar to that used in flash photography. Strobe lights work more effectively than rotating light bars as the bright flashing light better draws the attention of a motorist. Strobe bars are used primarily by large construction vehicles, as they alert the driver of a heavy on coming vehicle. Strobe lighting on the other hand cannot be used for many other things other than emergency vehicle lighting. The brightness of these lights can also cause glare on the rear view mirrors of other motorists. Emergency vehicle operators who are constantly exposed to the bright flashing lights for long periods of time also run the risk of developing eye complications.
However, LED technology is the widely preferred form of emergency light bars as they are much smaller, are brighter and last longer than both the strobe light bars and rotating light bars. These work best on emergency vehicles and are preferred over the others as they are also the more environmentally friendly option. LED light bulbs have proved to be a favorite especially for police cars as they have shown to be the most effective form of emergency lighting.
