New York Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball Drop Tips
The biggest event that takes place annually in New York Times Square is without a doubt the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square. This is possibly the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve celebration and is attended by over 1 million people, not to mention the millions around the world that watch on television or the internet.
If you plan to attend the ball drop plan to arrive early. Some of the best spots to see the ball will be filled by mid-afternoon on the 31st. There are not reserved spots so once you claim a position you need to remain there. You cannot plan on finding a spot and then leaving to eat, sightsee, or shop.
The ball drops from a flagpole at the top of One Times Square. For best viewing plan to be on Broadway between 43rd Street to 50th Street or on Seventh Avenue as far north as 59th Street. The earlier you arrive the closer you will be and the better your view.
Do not plan to drive to the ball drop. Using public transportation is the best way to arrive in Times Square. The subways will be crowded but taking the train to one of the nearby stations and then walking to the square is a better option than driving. Buses will take you to Port Authority where you can easily walk to the festivities. The other option is to walk on foot.
There are no public restrooms available in Times Square unless you have tickets to a party at a venue. Plan ahead and use the restroom before you arrive at the ball drop location.
Expect that the weather will be extremely cold. Dress in layers and wear a warm jacket, hat, scarf, gloves and anything else that will keep you warm. If you stand in one spot for hours it can get pretty cold.
Plan on a long wait by bringing snacks and drinks, alcohol is prohibited as public drinking is illegal in New York City. There will not be any licensed food vendors in Times Square, however, most restaurants will be open. Bags and backpacks are not allowed so pack your snacks in your layers and pockets. You might also come prepared with card games or other distractions.
There will be lots of people in Times Square so come with a positive attitude as well as a sense of humor and your patience. With so many people you can expect to get jostled around a little, have your view blocked, and be stepped on a few times. Expect these things to happen so that you will still be able to enjoy yourself.
If the crowded streets don’t sound like your ideal New Years celebration then you might consider making reservations to attend one of the venue parties, reservations for a restaurant or reservations for one of the Times Square hotels with a view of the ball drop. You will need to make your reservations well in advance as the fill up quickly.
